Emotional Freedom Techniques

What is EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) ?

EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) is a body-mind self-help method developed in the mid 90’s by Gary Craig to ease or release an infinite variety of emotional and physical aches and pains, psychological disturbances, as well as fears and limiting thoughts and beliefs.

The method was developed based on other various therapeutic fields as acupuncture, kinesiology and Thought Field Therapy.

How doesEFT work ?

EFT works with the body’s subtle energy system as well as with the unconscious part of our brain.

The method combines the use of tapping with the fingertips on acupuncture points (called meridians) together with a verbalization in complete mindfulness of inner thoughts and feelings.

The tapping enables the release of emotions stuck in the various points and allows therefore the energy to flow correctly and healthily through the meridians and the body. The verbalization enables to modify the internal perception of a situation/emotion and reprogram the unconscious part of our brain to react differently when facing a similar situation.

Who is EFT for ?

Gary Craig desire was to create a self-help method, easy to use and accessible to everyone. It can therefore be used by everyone over 7 years, even if the application slightly differs for children.

What are its applications ?

The applications of EFT are as follows:

  • Stress, anxiety disorders, fears, phobias, and OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorders)
  • Emotional difficulties, depression, and burnout
  • Separation, divorce, and grief
  • Sleeping problems
  • Pain and illness
  • Traumas
  • Self-esteem
  • Self-confidence
  • Bullying and academic difficulties
  • Attachment disorders
  • Slight dependencies
  • Weight loss, feed management, and eating disorders
  • Menopause
  • Sexuality
  • Development or improvement of athletic and academic abilities

In addition, EFT becomes a self-help tool for the future, thanks to the learning provided by the therapist.

How many sessions are needed to solve a problem?

The number of sessions depends on the depth of the problem on which the patient wishes to work, the objective set at the beginning of the therapy but also on the regularity with which the patient applies the method off sessions.

In addition, there may be possible unconscious resistances that may be present from the beginning of the follow-up or emerge during therapy.

Even if positive results are felt most of the time from the first session, it is important to keep in mind that in-depth work on the source of the problem or emotional/physical symptoms is necessary to avoid the re-emergence of those in the future.

How does an EFT session work ?

First, it is necessary to distinguish the first session of the therapeutic follow-up and the following sessions.

During the first appointment, we take the time to explore with the patient what brings them here, to discuss what they are currently experiencing, what their life path is and, above all, in which direction they want to go and how they want to feel in the future. This session also helps to create a bond of trust between the patient and the therapist, which is essential for the success of the therapy.

During subsequent appointments, this exchange continues in line with the objective set during the first interview, while remaining attentive to the patient’s needs and rhythm.

This exchange is then followed by the actual EFT session during which the therapist will guide the patient through the process of tapping and verbalization.

How often do the sessions take place ?

There is an interval of one to two weeks between the first interview and the first EFT session.

Then, the following sessions take place every 3 to 4 weeks to allow time for the work done outside of the session by the patient to bear fruit and thus allow the emotions to be completely released and the unconscious part of the mind to be positively reprogrammed.
